'Ugly as sin', 'ugly duckling', 'rear its ugly head'. The word 'ugly' is used freely, yet it is a loaded term: from the simply plain and unsightly to the repulsive and even offensive, definitions slide all over the place. Hovering around 'feared and dreaded', ugliness both repels and fascinates. But the concept of ugliness has a lineage that has long haunted our cultural imagination. Gretchen E. This study investigates the determinants of paternal investment by birth fathers and stepfathers. Inclusive fitness theory predicts higher parental investment in birth children than stepchildren, and this has consistently been found in previous studies. Here we investigate whether paternal investment varies with childhood co-residence duration and differs between stepfathers and divorced birth fathers by comparing the investment of (1) stepfathers, (2) birth fathers who are separated from the child’s mother, and (3) birth fathers who still are in a relationship with (...) her. Path analysis was conducted using cross-sectional data from adolescents and younger adults (aged 17–19, 27–29, and 37–39 years) from the German Family Panel (pairfam), collected in 2010–2011 (_n_ = 8326). As proxies of paternal investment, we used financial and practical help, emotional support, intimacy, and emotional closeness, as reported by the children. We found that birth fathers who were still in a relationship with the mother invested the most, and stepfathers invested the least. Furthermore, the investment of both separated fathers and stepfathers increased with the duration of co-residence with the child. However, in the case of financial help and intimacy, the effect of childhood co-residence duration was stronger in stepfathers than in separated fathers. Our findings support inclusive fitness theory and mating effort theory in explaining social behavior and family dynamics in this population. Furthermore, social environment, such as childhood co-residence was associated with paternal investment. (shrink)

Human diploid fibroblasts have a finite proliferative lifespan in culture, at the end of which they are ararrested with G1 phase DNA contents. Upon serum stimulation, senescent cells are deficient in carrying out a subset of early signal transduction events such as activation of protein kinase C and induction of c‐fos. Later in G1, they uniformly fail to express late G1 genes whose products are required for DNA synthesis, implying that they are unable to pass the R point. Failure to (...) pass the R point may occur because senescent cells are unable to phosphorylate the retinoblastoma protein, owing to the accumulation of inactive complexes of cyclin E/Cdk2 and possibly cyclin D/Cdk4. Senescent cells contain high amounts of p21, a potent cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitor whose levels are also elevated in cells arrested in G1 following DNA damage, suggesting that both arrests might share a common mechanism. Cell aging is accompanied by a progressive shortening of chromosomal telomeres, which could be perceived by the cells as a form of DNA damage that gives rise to the signals that inactivate the cell cycle machinery. Rhetorik der Platonischen Verteidigung des Sokrates Die Platonische Verteidigung des Sokrates nimmt einen besonderen Platz im Werk Platons ein. Zweifellos schafft sie viele Fragen, das Datum und Umstände ihrer Entste- hung betreffend, oder hinsichtlich der darin enthaltenen originellen ldeen und ihrer Treue gegenüber der Verteidigungsrede von Sokrates selbst. Die Verteidigungsrede (eigentlich sind es drei Verteidigungsreden) ist jedoch auch aus dem Grund sehr interessant, daß sie (als Verteidigungsrede) zu einer gewissen Tradition gehört, die für immer mit der Sophi- stik verbunden (...) ist. Diese Tatsache erlangt besonders deswegen große Bedeutung, weil Platon mit diesen Reden ein Gebiet betritt, das eine Domäne der philosophischen Haupt- feinde sowohl von Sokrates als auch von Platon selbst ist. Aus der Perspektive der späte- ren Texte Platons und der darin geäußerten Ablehnung gegenüber Anwendung der Rhe- torik ist es interessant, die Apologie des Sokrates in ihrem Aufbau zu analysieren. Die Be- stimmung des intertextuellen Hintergrunds der Platonischen Verteidigung des Sokrates, ihr Bezug auf rhetorische Traditionen jener Zeit und der Hinweis auf strukturelle, inhal- tliche und philosophische Anknüpfungen können bei der Rekonstruktion der Platonischen Auffassung von Rhetorik und des Verhältnisses Platons zu der Sophistik hilfreich sein. Auf dem Weg des Textverstehens bedient sich die Hermeneutik Ricœurs der sog. Distanzierung, die miteinbezieht, dass das Subjekt des Verstehens über das Lesen, das Hören, das Sehen aus sich selbst austritt, und fordert notwendigerweise eine Art von Andersheit. In dieser Andersheit könnte man auch Derridas „differAnce” erkennen, die in ihren Folgen in eine völlig andere Richtung führt als Ricœurs Begriff der Distanzierung. Die beiden Autoren können besonders auf dem gemeinsamen Feld der Metapherforschung verglichen werden. Ist für Ricśur die wahre Metapher (...) nur die lebendige, diejenige, die neue Bedeutungen schafft und von ihm aus den gegenwärtigen Theorien Blacks und Richards abgeleitet wird, so ist für Derrida in Die weiße Mythologie die ganze Philosophie nur vergessene Metaphorik, die zunächst zum eigenen Tode und danach noch mittelbar zum Tode der Philosophie führt. In dieser immer mehr globalisierten Welt, wo sich auf der einen Seite alle Grenzen und Unterschiede verwischen, tauchen auf der anderen Seite Fundamentalismen auf, die um jeden Preis die Unüberwindlichkeit dieser Unterschiede zu zeigen versuchen. In dem gegenwärtigen europäischem Vereinigungskonzept wie bei jedem anderen Erwachsenwerden haben Erziehung und Ausbildung eine wichtige Rolle bei der Bewahrung der eigenen Identität und der Vorbereitung auf das Verstehen der anderen und auf das gemeinsame Handeln. Es scheint, man könnte mit Hilfe von Ricœurs Begriff der Distanzierung diese zweifache Forderung vereinen. Da aber diese Ansicht über das Erziehungs- und Ausbildungsgebiet wieder in eine „neue Mythologie” geraten könnte, die man als Grundlage der fundamentalistischen Abkapselung versteht, ist es notwendig, diesen Prozess mit Derridas Kritik zu verfolgen. Throughout the long history of Classic Maya hieroglyphs, a logosyllabic writing system used from the late first millennium BCE through the mid-second millennium CE in southern Mesoamerica, the most commonly recorded phonetic value was the syllable u (/ʔu/). With over a dozen different u hieroglyphs, Classic Maya scribes had more options for recording /ʔu/ than any other syllable or logograph. Cognitive approaches to writing systems typically attribute graphemic variation (i.e., alternation between signs with equivalent linguistic value) to semantic differences like (...) animacy or to non-linguistic factors like identity. Distribution of Classic Maya u hieroglyphs, however, suggests that morphosyntactic context influenced which grapheme scribes wrote and when. This case suggests that scribal knowledge of Classic Maya hieroglyphs included ideas about writing's relationship to language. It also highlights the cognitive relevance of morphosyntax for a writing system's users as they differentiate among graphic signs with identical linguistic denotation. (shrink)

It is not infrequently said that the true justification of moral beliefs lies in theology. I wish here to examine precisely what is meant by this contention, and by what arguments, if any, it can be substantiated. The view I am examining is not that the only valid reason for doing what is right is a theological reason ; as if we could know independently of theology what was right, but required a theological motive to make it reasonable to do (...) it. It is rather that the very fact that it is right is logically dependent on certain facts of a theological nature; or, to express the matter otherwise, that from certain theological propositions it is possible validly to draw certain conclusions in the form of propositions which state what I ought to do, and that this fact is the source of the validity of these latter propositions. This, however, is not yet a sufficiently precise account of the theory in question, since it might cover a number of different contentions, some of which I think may be reasonably maintained, while others, I think, may not. I propose to work towards a clearer formulation by considering certain arguments which have been advanced in order to deny outright the very possibility of arguing validly “from theology to ethics”; for I do believe that these arguments prove something , and rule out certain theories as untenable.
